The morning air is cool and crisp. The days are starting to get shorter, dark comes sooner. The leaves are starting to turn, pretty soon they’ll fall and coat the ground. The tomatoes and strawberries are looking tired and are being overshadowed by bright shiny apples and orange pumpkins at the local farm market. The dazzling blue, white, purple and yellow flowers are changing to orange and gold and rusty reds. You know the inevitable has come when your daily afternoon iced Americano from Starbucks has been replaced by regular steaming hot coffee. No more flip-flops – my comfy reliable ol’ flip-flops. I guess I simply can’t deny it anymore, summer is over and here comes the fall.

Don’t get me wrong, I love the fall. Who can resist halloween, trick or treating, bags full of leaves, pretty colorful sweaters, hot cocoa with cinnamon, and hearty soups and stews and apple picking? Apples, I love apples. Do you know that I eat at least one apple a day? I’m a true believer of the saying “an apple a day keeps the doctor away.” To welcome the fall I thought of making apple cake. Not apple pie, apple cake. There’s just too many excellent apple pies out there. I saw this recipe from Smitten Kitchen and I couldn’t resist. This cake has a funny story too, if you have time you should visit her site. She has a lot of good recipes.

The apartment smelled so good while we it baked. Chip couldn’t wait to cut it. He looked dissapointed when I told him we’re bringing it to my mom’s house the next day and he can have a piece then. It looks very promising though, I’ll keep you posted.
Last call, it’s fall.
Last weekend we went hiking in Great Falls, Virginia. We had a lot of fun even though we got eaten alive by mosquitoes. It rained the entire weekend so when we got there the area was infested by mosquitoes and we forgot to put on bug spray. Bummer.
You can’t beat nature though. Look.

Beautiful, isn’t it?

A constant reminder.

While we were there, these guys were kayaking.
